1. Drink LOTS of water. Water should be drunk as a habit on a regular basis. It is also important to make sure that you drink 8 to 12 ounces of water at least 30 minutes before a meal.2. You should not skip meals. If you do, your body will likely interpret missed meals as the beginnings of starvation. When this occurs, the body starts storing up fats to make up for the starvation.
3. When you eat, make it just a little and do it often, but remember that you also need to follow the next two rules, otherwise you're likely to come unstuck.
4. You should only eat when you are hungry. Never wait until you are half starved. You must recognize when you are hungry and then eat something.
5. Get out of the habit of eating when you're not hungry! Sometimes we just eat out of habit simply because it's normally time for a meal. This doesn't necessarily mean you are hungry. Just that you are eating out of habit. Don't do it.
6. When you feel full, you should stop eating. You're body will tell you when you've had enough. When it does, listen to it and stop eating. Don't worry that there is still food left on your plate. That's not a problem and it's OK. This is a cue that next time, you should consider a smaller portion.
7. Get out of the bad habit of watching TV or reading while you are eating. The taste of the food should be savored. Pay attention to your food and how you eat it. When you start to taste your food again, you'll actually enjoy it more.
8. Try to avoid sugars. Make a regular habit of reading the labels. Those empty sugar calories are often often lurking in some unsuspected foods. Especially watch for items containing corn syrup, glucose, fructose, lactose, honey, molasses or plain ordinary sugar. Be aware that low fat foods often contain large amounts of sugar in order to make up for the lack of fats.
Above all, remember that it's not a sin if you slip off of your diet once in a while. Your entire diet plan has not been wasted just because eat poorly on occasion.
